Chapter 17
With the entrance to the waiting area in our sight, Jim and I sat. I expected Sue to arrive and subject us to a grilling. I didnât much care, my concern was to receive a report on the health of Pete and Amy. I got up and paced around before sitting down again. I was about to repeat this demonstration of impatience when Jim laid a restraining hand on my shoulder.
âConserve your energy and try to relax, marching up and down will not help.â
âI canât help it. Weâve been here forty minutes, if the kids are okay youâd think theyâd know by now. Does that mean theyâre not okay?â
âNo it means the staff on duty have other patients, are overworked and most likely underpaid. Do us all a favor and try to contain yourself.â
Easy to say, hard to do; but I knew he was right. At long last my patience was rewarded. A doctor came out to report both of them were dehydrated and in need of food, especially Pete, otherwise they were all in one piece. Physically anyway. He expressed concern over the possible psychological impact on them and informed us they were being kept in. The police officer whoâd come to the hospital would be remaining on duty but the patients were in no fit state to be interviewed or to receive visitors. We should come back tomorrow. He must have thought we were police officers.
His report was all couched in medical terms of course but that was the gist of it and I felt very relieved. Iâd worried that Pete may have been beaten at some stage and that Amy may have been subjected to a different form of suffering. Just as that thought passed through my head I looked up to see Sue marching toward us.
âHow are they?â
âIâm relieved to say the report was pretty good. No physical abuse but Pete in particular is showing signs of dehydration. He has low blood pressure, a rapid heartbeat and rapid breathing. And heâs very sleepy. I was very worried in case Amy had been sexually assaulted but sheâs okay.â
âWell that is a relief. It could all have been a lot worse. Okay, we need to talk so Iâll follow you home and you can get the coffee on the go.â
Jim looked aghast at this. âCoffee! You sure you wouldnât prefer something stronger?â
âNo Iâll need a clear head to de-cipher all the BS youâre likely to try feeding me.â At least she was smiling as she said it.
On the drive home I agreed with Jim we wouldnât mention the part played by Marc. Other than that we would tell Sue the truth.
It was just after eleven when we let ourselves in to find Jean fast asleep in an armchair. She reported Jack and Emily had behaved themselves apart from an argument over who should have the last chocolate biscuit. No change there. I briefly told her weâd found Amy and her brother and they were both okay. She too was mightily relieved.
